Brand Profile: Parkland Manufacturing
The millennial travel industry right now is completely different from even just ten years ago. With more and more young people aiming to go on shorter, but more frequent trips, their luggage and packing needs change as well. Parkland Design and Manufacturing understands this; possibly more so than others. Operating out of Vancouver, BC, Parkland creates design-driven gear with clean silhouettes that are built to last. Whether it’s a daily commute, a weekend getaway or an excursion with friends, their products are designed for travel and adventure.
Check out this interview we did with Sean Miller, the sales and business development manager at Parkland Design and Manufacturing, where we talked about the background of Parkland, their first Spring/Summer collection, and what they have planned for the brand next.
Parkland is defined as an “open land consisting of fields and scattered groups of trees.” What does Parkland mean to you personally?
When I think of Parkland literally, I think about the places we used to go as a family for a weekend or afternoon getaway. As it pertains to business, Parkland is an opportunity to inspire individuals to find their escape and give them great products along the way.
How would you describe Parkland as a brand in one word?
Sorry, but it needs to be three: simple, clean, and refined.
Tell us a little bit about your first Spring 2016 collection
We have 5 styles for Spring 16; the Meadow Backpack, the Vintage Backpack, the View Duffle, the Valley Travel Kit, and the High Point Accessories Case. Throughout the line we use a very durable 600D poly fabric that has a sturdy structure and clean look. The line also features full grain leather accents to complete the pieces.
The motivation behind our initial offering was to refine some of the classic bag silhouettes while adding complimentary accessories. Good design is in the simple details.
Any immediate plans to expand the collection beyond backpacks, duffels and pouches?
The team has already developed some awesome new styles for the upcoming seasons. We are also excited to introduce kids products to our line which will debut with our Fall 16 collection.
What are you guys working on next?
We’re continuing to get a head of design and development for upcoming seasons. On the marketing side, driving brand awareness and exposure is very important right now as we continue to find innovative ways to connect with our consumers globally. Supporting our retailers and building merchandizing strategies is another key initiative for us.
Where can retailers go to see your collections?
Our spring collection is now available at Bentley, Indigo, West 49, Sport Experts, and Sports Chek in Canada. In the US you can find Parkland at Dick’s Sporting Goods, Finish Line, Robert Wayne, and Tilly’s. You can also see the whole Spring 16 collection at www.parklandmfg.com.
We have taken a private showing approach for each of our buyers. As we continue to grow we are looking at trade opportunities that extend beyond the traditional markets of our industry.
